At Portnoo, you are likely to find a couple of calves eyeing you at the opening tee. The second hole is a dogleg right around a lake where 25 pairs of swans live. The next two holes lead right out to the sea. Next is a dogleg left up into the dunes for a clear view of the curving strand (beach) and the giant sandhills of Gweebarra Bay.

Best view on the course is the elevated blue tee on the 9^th. Behind is the strand and in the distance the Blue Stack Mountains of Donegal’s Highlands. Before you is another lovely strand. The fairway is a rollercoaster of ridges and hollows all the way to the green out on a promontory. The 12^th is another rollercoaster amongst the dunes. The 14^th is a downhill dogleg right to a green tucked up in the dunes and guarded by beautifully revetted bunkers.

Portnoo is blessed with as fine a set of par 3s as you’ll find anywhere. If you play them well you are likely to return with a good score. Otherwise……? The 8^th is a terrific par 3 over a valley in the dunes to a plateau green with great views from tee and green. The rule of thumb on this one is: wind behind, take a wedge; wind ahead, take a driver. The 13^th curves around an enormous sand-hill. The last and shortest of the par 3s, the 16^th, is known as “the High Altar” because of the number of good scores sacrificed on it. The neatly revetted bunkers and surrounding small dunes will catch any but the most perfect tee-shot.

Windswept links, great hospitality, starts moderately and gets more challenging as it goes on.
